September 25, 2008 - Stingers Win Capital Classic Tournament

In what will surely become known as the "Battle of the 10 yr. Old Titans", the Williamston U-11 Girls soccer team won the championship game in the Silver division of the Capital Classic Tournament this past weekend. After falling behind 3-0 in the first half to a talented group of girls from Dexter, Mich., the Williamston Stingers regrouped in the second half and rallied to tie the match with about eight minutes remaining. In the waning minutes of regulation, both teams missed several goal-scoring chances so the game proceeded to overtime. But, two OT periods were not enough and a Shootout was necessary. This was the time for the Stingers to sting. They scored on 4 of 5 Penalty Kicks and won it in World Cup fashion. It is likely a game they will remember the rest of their lives.
